Medical Transportation Management, a large, non-emergent medical transportation company was experiencing rapid growth. They recognized that to scale their business in the most efficient manner, they needed to modernize their business-critical applications. It was time for Oakwood to look at a virtual data center solution.
This included simultaneously producing tangible cost savings, and avoiding the high costs associated with building a data center in-house. Adding to the challenges associated with rapid growth was a recent and significant amount of turnover. The new CIO and the IT Leadership Team realized that they could be more successful by focusing on innovation, versus building out their own data center.
The medical transportation company partnered with Oakwood. We established a virtual data center in Azure and built custom applications to power their operations. We also built a central data warehouse to power their business intelligence. The first part of this solution is a multi-tiered application, built 100% on Azure. Full connectivity to their on-premises resources via secure VPN connections was critical. The foundation of the data tier for this solution resides on an Azure IaaS-based High Availability SQL Server 2012 Cluster.
This server serves as a central hub and an operational data store. Surrounding this ODS is a PaaS-based SOA layer. This layer centralizes business logic and workflows for a myriad of apps that power the extended operations for each of the organization’s business units. This SOA layer powers a MVC.Net application. That application manages the service intake, provider management, and provider assignment functions of their CSR operations.
The second part of this solution included a full installation of a System Center. This allowed the company to govern data protection, patching, monitoring, and self-service requests related to the application and other surrounding infrastructure. Oakwood provided a set of managed services to deliver first wave monitoring and some level of support. The result? It freed up our client’s IT team. In the end, they could be more strategic and deliver a higher level of service to the business.
The third part of this solution included an implementation of Office 365. This initiative helped our client gain tremendous efficiency and cost-savings. In particular, they saw benefits with corporate email, document management, and instant messaging.
Finally, the entire solution was integrated with their existing data platform. As a result, it provided a smooth transition plan away from the old technology. Together, these four cloud-focused projects delivered a lot! Tools, processes, and technology needed to enable growth desired by the business. Not to mention producing tangible savings. And avoiding the high costs associated with building a data center.
