Case Study | Cloud Application
A global construction firm reached out to Oakwood with a pressing need. Overall growth in the construction industry has led to a significant challenge for many construction service providers: recruiting, retaining, and maximizing employee utilization. There’s no denying the negative financial impact of an understaffed or an underutilized workforce – or a workforce that is not efficiently deployed.
Oakwood was selected by this global construction firm to develop an internal-facing technology solution that effectively forecasted staffing needs and also automated the presentation of data that allowed management to allocate appropriately skilled staff to each upcoming job.
The challenge for this global construction firm was effectively forecasting staffing needs for their numerous, concurrent projects and then allocating appropriately skilled staff to each job. Every construction project has unique staffing needs with regard to the level of skill, the area of expertise, physical ability, location, years of experience, and so forth. Trying to staff against those needs and keep track of employee utilization was burdensome to the business and created a multitude of gaps and overlaps.
The previously existing solution had several shortcomings that made the application less-than-effective. Users were not able to track employee experience or query on up-to-date information on skill levels. The application also didn’t allow for the scheduling of future staffing needs nor did it support the ability to forecast recruiting needs. In summary, the firm was left with a database of employees, but could not effectively match their workforce to current project needs.

The new and improved solution provides these needed functionalities through the use of an AngularJS application that communicates with the backend processes via WCF services to a SQL server database, which was deployed to an environment in Azure. Employee profiles were expanded to show project allocation and history. Project workflows were put in place to allow business users to specify project needs and then search for employees based on role requirements. Reporting was added to provide an overview of resource statuses.
Our client is now able to effectively forecast their staffing needs well in advance and can react quickly if resource allocation is not optimal. Business users are now empowered to manage their projects without the added burden of resource allocation.
